Good for my needs July 27, 2010 Benjamin I. Sevilla (Minnapolis, MN USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am an academic who is interested on taking the ipad to lectures and presentations. This little connector is very useful. The laser feature built in Keynote is fantastic. It does what I need, get the ipad connected to a projector to show my slides without the weight of my bulky laptop. It also shows movies and youtube videos. Perfect for my needs!
Why would you buy it here? July 13, 2010 E. Kim 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Why would you buy the iPad VGA Dock Connector here for over $40 when it only retails for $29 at the Apple Store?
Good, when Apple doesn't restrict its usage June 28, 2010 MartinB 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When it works within Apple's constraints it's good, however it does not duplicate everything you do on the iPad, and many apps that you use do not support it.
I wanted to use it to demonstrate a new website I was using, but Safari does not output. I've since read elsewhere online that even movies that you buy may not stream out due to Apple's fairplay DRM.
I've found apps on the Apps Store which for a dollar report to output web browser content, but you shouldn't have to buy an app (which Apple may even put restrictions on in the future) in order to use a product designed to output content to a VGA source. I made the assumption that because Steve Jobs demo'd the iPad using what appeared to be a similar device that this was what the VGA adapter would do. How wrong I was.
Product get 5 stars - iPad implementation gets 1 star June 21, 2010 Stephen Marth (San Ramon, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product in fact works but depends on the app if (and how) it displays to the external device: (1) a mirror copy, (2) totally different content, or (3) nothing (default).
However, from the product description, customers probably expect an external display to mirror what is on the iPad screen.
Unfortunately, most apps do not support an external device so display nothing when the cable is connected.
There is benefit in having the application control the external display rather than always use a copy of the primary display. For example, video can display on the external display while the controls show up on the iPad screen.
It would be a nice iPad feature to have system settings to handle the external display default mode.
That way any software that does not provide external display support would at least mirror the iPad screen. As it works currently is somewhat lame and makes the accessory look like an afterthought that was never planned upfront.
