Product Description WD Advanced Format technology increases media format efficiency, thus enabling larger drive capacities. WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. WD Advanced Format drives work with legacy operating systems such as Windows XP but require the use of the free WD Align software available on www.wdc.com/advformat.
Available in capacities up to 2 TB, WD Caviar® GreenTM SATA hard drives reduce power consumption by up to 40% and offer best-in-class acoustics and operating temperature. Based on WD's exclusive GreenPowerTM technology, these drives are designed to deliver power savings as the primary attribute. As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. They are ideal for PCs, external storage and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

Opinion/ Info only March 7, 2010 goodolddave (Monroe, MI. United States) Try this link and the discussion that follows ... (...) Seems Amazon removed my link... Makes this a more like a high performance 5200rpm drive, enhanced speed only because of increased density on the platters. I had to give a rating to give a review... I gave it a 5 for what it is attempting to do, but a 2 for not explaining on it's website what it is attempting to do and not giving rotational speeds.
not a problem March 7, 2010 Thomas W. Kime (Montana) I was a little worried when I read the other reviews while waiting for this drive to get here. But its here and I followed the directions and used the jumper across pins 7&8, its not a big deal and the drive works fine, the biggest issue , I had to find my own jumper.
Plug n play for Netgear Stora NAS March 7, 2010 Dave R. I bought this drive to serve as a mirror (RAID 1) drive for my Netgear Stora NAS unit, which I use for backup on my home network. Installed this drive on the fly, plug n play. My Stora immediately recognized it and built the RAID 1 setup on the fly with no issues. Met my expectations without a hitch.
Super Quality Hard-drive March 4, 2010 Valentine Lugovsky (New York, NY USA) Wanted to replace my smaller boot drive with a large one. Picked this because of cost, "green" attributes and lower running temperatures. Certainly met all of the criteria. Running like a champ! One caveat, be prepared to run an "ALIGN" utility if you're using XP as the O/S. Will take a few hours (based on quantity of data).
Highly recommend.
Ok in Vista, Poor in Linux March 3, 2010 Daniel J. Stutzman (Pittsburgh, PA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I originally bought one of these to replace the failing HDD in my DirecTV DVR (HR20-100). This is supposed to be an easy operation, but it turned in to a 2-day troubleshooting and second-guessing nightmare. The DVR would keep freezing, menus were sluggish, playback was blocky and intermittent, and so was rewind/FF/Play performance. Forget recording 2 HD shows at once, and watching a recorded one meanwhile.
I ended up pulling a WD Black 640 GB drive out of my computer, deleting the partitions, and plugging THAT into the DVR with amazing results. The DVR was like new again.
After doing some reading, I found other users who said not to use these in Linux, as Linux does not see the block size correctly. I did some further reading, and you can apparently get them to work with some editing, but who wants to do that? I didn't bother.
I tried it in my Vista machine, and it's ok as an internal drive with one partition. It's slow, compared to a 7200, but you expect that.
